This guide takes you step-by-step through the process of building your complete scope setup so you can find what fits you best and be confident with your decision.
Where to begin
Read through the drop down menus below to learn more about each step of the process and what options are available. Each step of the process is presented below the guide and a variety of options are shown. More colors and options may be available in the full collection which can always be viewed by clicking "View All" in each step.
Step 1 - Choose your scope
We offer a variety of scopes so there is something to suit everyone and every situation.
Which size scope do I need?
This is based on our experience and what is typically seen. All of our scopes are capable of being used in all disciplines of archery.
42/40mm: Typically used for 3D archery. The larger scope size enables the shooter to see more of the target and pick up on reference points on the targets. Two and three step sunshades are available for these size scopes that will reduce the inside diameter to 35mm.
35mm: Versatile scope size that can be used for 3D, field, and indoor. The addition of a 2-step sunshade will reduce the inside diameter to 29mm for even better field and indoor performance. Two and three step sunshades are available for this size scope that will reduce the inside diameter to 29mm.
29mm: Typically seen in field and indoor archery. The smaller scope size gives increased vane clearance and allows the shooter to focus in on their target.
What scope series should I choose?
Optum series: This is our newest scope series and it is designed for maximum adjustability and ease of use. The Optum series is available in a 40mm and 35mm size and there are a multitude of sunshade and lens combinations available for them.
Nomad series: This is a stripped down, lightweight version of the Optum with many of the same features. The reduced weight and size comes at the expense of the ease of use, as the Nomad takes longer to adapt to various configurations. Available in a 42mm and 35mm option.
Mini Mag: This is 29mm version of the Nomad series with all the same features.
Step 2 - Lenses
Lenses are available in a variety of powers and models and what works well for one person may not work for another. What power lens you choose and how it works for you depends on your eyesight, scope size, intended use, and peep size. Due to the number of factors that must be accounted for it's difficult to say for certain which is best but in our experience 4x and 6x lenses are the most popular.
Typically, 4x lenses don't require a clarifier and they provide adequate magnification without too much target movement. These are very popular for 3D, field, and indoor events alike as they strike a happy medium between magnification, movement, and sight picture.
A 6x lens will show more of the target but it also increases the movement seen and it may require a clarifier. More commonly, this power lens is used indoors or for field archery but it has a place in 3D archery for those running larger scopes. More magnification means you see less surrounding the target which is beneficial with paper targets and bales but it can cause you to lose reference points with 3D targets.
The Optum 40mm and 35mm scopes utilize the same lens size (1.75") and lens housing, making it easy and more cost effective to have multiple scope setups.
The Nomad 42mm and 35mm scopes utilize the same lens size (1.67") and housing, making it easy and more cost effective to have multiple scope setups.
Step 3 - Sunshades
Sunshades are available in a variety of options for each scope model and each sunshade serves a unique purpose. Typically a long sunshade is used on the target side of the scope (threaded into the lens) and a short sunshade is threaded into the eye side of the scope.
MDR: Flat, metal decal ring with a white centering ring and no shade
1-Step: Short sunshade with a white centering ring
2-Step: Short sunshade with two white centering rings. Reduces the inside diameter. 42/40mm scopes are reduced to 35mm and 35mm scopes are reduced to 29mm.
3-Step: Short sunshade with three white centering rings. Reduces the inside diameter and expands the outside diameter. 42/40mm scopes are reduced to 35mm and 35mm scopes are reduced to 29mm.
Long: The longest sunshade we offer that offers maximum shade. Typically used on the lens to prevent glare.
Step 4 - Mounting your scope
All Shrewd scopes come standard with 10-32 BHCS bolts for mounting your scope to a variety of sights.
For a more secure attachment we offer scope rods that are made for specific sight brands that eliminate movement and make mounting your scope a simple process.
When utilizing a scope rod be sure to remove the hex nut found on the outside of the scope. Doing so will allow the square end of the scope rod to locate within a machined pocket on the scope and prevent rotation.
To see which scope rod is needed for your sight, check the scope rod product listing and read through the product details.
Step 5 - Accessories
Choose from additional accessories to outfit your scope. We offer a variety of light kits to illuminate your pin or lens, scope covers to protect your investment, flip covers to keep dust and debris off your lens, and many other options.
Step 1 - Choose your scope
Step 2 - Lenses
All lenses come installed in a metal lens housing that is threaded to accept sunshades.

Step 3 - Sunshades

Step 4 - Mounting your scope
All Shrewd scopes come standard with 10-32 BHCS bolts for mounting your scope to a variety of sights. While all Shrewd scopes come with a variety of bolt lengths we cannot guarantee they will be correct for every sight model, to ensure your scope and sight are compatible we recommend using one of the machined scope rods we offer.
Scope rods offer a secure attachment, prevent rotation, and create a cleaner look. They are made for specific sight brands to ensure compatibility and make mounting your scope a simple process.
